2nd Annual Fil-Am Expo held Saturday April 26th
The finest city in America once again bore witness to
the celebration by Filipino Americans of their culture,
arts, talents, assets, business acumen and synergy with
other organizations and businesses in second annual
Fil-Am Trade and Cultural EXPO on April 26th. The Golden
Hall, known as the political hub on election day, was
the choice of venue to showcase Fil-Am Businesses,
cultural groups and health care exhibitors, as well as
hosting several key workshops and providing a variety of
entertainment. The Golden Hall was transformed into a
sea of blue and white 10X10 booths organized in a
wave-like fashion towards the central stage.
The One Vision One Voice (OVOV) a Filipino-American
movement sponsored and organized this “Heart of the
Community” event with Mimi Estrada chairing the
organizing committee.
The event was kicked off by a ribbon cutting which
included Chula Vista Mayor Cheryl Cox, National City
Mayor Ron Morrision and Arlie Ricasa, Sweetwater Union
High School District Board of Trustees. Proclamations
were also given out by San Diego Councilmember’s Tony
Young and Ben Hueso as well as by San Diego Mayor Jerry
Sanders.
Making a return visit the Expo, the Consulate General of
the Philippines, headed by Vice Consul Jim B. San
Agustin, was again on hand to provide their consular
services for those unable to make the drive up to the
L.A. office. This year they were able to bring along
their department of Tourism and Trade.
Operation Samahan Community Health Center provided free
health care screening for everyone and their internet
technology division was able to give away free computers
to four lucky attendees.
AT&T, who is coming out with their U-verse service, was
on hand to educate and sing up subscribers. U-Verse is
similar to what folks receive from Cox and Time-Warner
only the service will be send over the fiber optics
phone lines rather than the traditional Cable line.
On the main stage, the entertainment showcased several
main stream and up-and-coming Fil-Am performers of San
Diego. Those in attendance were able to relax and enjoy
the charming vocals of Armie Guzman, the exhilarating
sounds of R&B singer Marlon Dane, hip hop singer Pamela
Payge and 2006’s Search for a Star Champion, Sharon
Rose. As a bonus, Chef Larry was on hand to demonstrate
how to cook up some great healthy Filipino Food and pass
on some of his cooking secrets.
OVOV wishes to thank everyone who came out to attend
this event, as well as those who help support the Expo
including, RCBC, Sam Sampson- PCS, Viejas Band of
Kumeyaay Indians, Kimberly Nguyen with AIG Insurance
Company, Tess Paje with ICM Financial, AT&T U-Verse, the
Isang Lahi Foundation, Z90.3 Radio Station, San Diego
Center for the Blind and Operation Samahan.
